when i joined the community garden the first plant I grew from seed and transplanted was this echinacea into the butterfly garden. echinacea purpurea, also known as coneflower, has strong medicinal properties. you can make a tisane from the stem leaves and flower of the echinacea plant, as well as the roots from three year-old plants. that's right, it takes 3 years for that plant to build up a root with all those medicinal properties. here is some info on echinacea. four years later that single plant has grown to so, so many. I haven't given too much thought to harvesting the roots, since I am content to watch this perennial flower expand in the garden. seeing the sunset over a patch of blooming echinacea is a treasure.

when I took over a perennial bed at the community garden a couple of years ago it had it it a pretty good size lovage plant in it. i watched as it grew massive, well over seven feet tall in a raised bed. I harvested and dried a fair amount of leaves for use in food. the leaves taste like celery, but stronger. putting these dried or fresh leaves paired with anything sounds good to me, but less is more with this herb. the leaves from one plant will last you through the next harvest if you store them properly. always out of direct sunlight, and always in a dark glass, the plant starts degrading quite quickly, i've found. about the time the plant is at height with your hair it starts to form umbels, very large and sprawling palm-sized ones that form pretty yellow flowers, which if left will go to seed, shown above. i just wait until the umbel stalk is dry and cut it off into a bag. you can use the seeds dried or fresh. lovage seeds have a perfumed anise-celery flavor that will wake up every tastebud in your mouth. I definitely recommend growing a lovage plant. i am going to try to grow some from saved seed this year and see how that works out. gardening is just one learning experiment!

mint is one of those herbs that is so popular in our kitchen and bars but the annoying little brother of the garden. i had such garbage soil in the little bit of a yard that i have that i transplanted some pineapple mint as well as some orange mint as a filler. a year later i'm pulling little minty sprouts out of my strawberries and yarrow every day. in the community garden there are delicious little spearmint and peppermint patches that are only kept at bay by vigorous and dedicated pulling and not letting the mint go to flower. it's beautiful that everyone has fresh mint for their health. I also have chocolate mint growing and that is in a container, but it gets quite leggy and doesn't care for the lack of spread space. the bees and insects really enjoy the mint so I let it do its thing in the garden, while maintaining a sense of border with it.

sage is so wonderful, and so confusing to me, who is anaphylactic to chia seed. more on that in a blog post! my favorite sage plant was an organic berggarten sage transplant that is just massive and happy now, a year after planting in my raised bed. the above photographed sage is common culinary sage from a massive sage plant in my allotment. sage is so beneficial to have in the garden and deters pests and will last through the frost and snow. sage is one of the easiest herbs to store, if not the easiest, and makes an excellent steam for germy winter booger-faced kids, or man-cold daddies.
